Cancellation Watch: Black Mirror Rises to Number 1, Gotham Knights Goes Out on a Low Note, and More

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Netflix Top 10

Black Mirror topped the Netflix charts for the week of June 19th to 25th. That was the first full week for Season 6 in the charts and it pulled in 60 million hours of viewing across 11.6 million accounts. It remains a high-profile series for Netflix and a seventh season looks like a good bet at this point. The animated Monster-verse series Skull Island had its debut that week but did not make it into the Top 10. In the Non-English Language charts, the Korean supernatural drama See You in My 19th Life was at Number 6 with 7.6 million hours viewed and the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Swordsmith Village Arc was at Number 7 with 7.1 million hours. Following are the full results for sci fi and fantasy TV shows in the Netflix charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

On Tuesday on The CW, the cancelled Gotham Knights had its series finale and only managed a 0.03 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 330K total viewers. That show’s ratings went on a notable decline over its final month, though that was in part due to the low-viewership Summer season. Leading into that Superman & Lois improved to a 0.10 rating with 733K total viewers for its season finale.

On Monday, The CW’s acquisition series The Rising improved to a 0.05 rating with 391K total viewers which are not bad numbers for a Summer entry on that network. But that show was already cancelled in its home country of Britain, so it is unlikely that The CW would save it. Interestingly, a repeat of Nancy Drew that followed that show on Monday pulled a 0.05 rating which was better than the 0.03 score a new episode had on Wednesday. The network might want to consider some schedule shuffling.

On Sunday, AMC’s The Walking Dead: Dead City held at a 0.14 rating with 681K total viewers.  That one has been billed as a mini-series, but there is a chance that it could continue to a second season.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

#SaveWarriorNun: Fans are trying to save Warrior Nun from cancellation.

News broke this week that Warrior Nun will be returning, but I am keeping it in the cancelled column because it still got the ax at Netflix and it will be moving to a different venue. The MGM+ series From received an official renewal announcement last week, but I already had that one in the renewed column because Production Weekly had announced the start of the third season. So the Cancellation/Renewal Score remains the same at 38 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries so far this season (43% of shows tracked) vs. 36 cancelled and ending (40%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 89
Cancelled 20 22.5%
Ending 16 18.0% 40.4%
Renewed 38 42.7%
Mini-Series 3 3.4%
On the Bubble 5 5.6%
Renewal Possible 7 7.9%
