Breaking News: Jupiter’s Legacy Ends, Second Season Will Not Go Forward at Netflix

Netflix seems to have become much like the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland of late, sitting upon its throne as the biggest streaming service (for the moment) yelling “Off with their heads!” to the latest show network execs have decided to cancel. Away and The Irregulars were given the ax pretty quick despite strong viewership numbers. The streamer hasn’t even bothered to tell has the fates of shows like Cursed and Dragon’s Dogma (though I am expecting an “off with their heads!” verdict for each, and you can read about more cancelled Netflix shows at this link). And now they have cancelled the superhero series Jupiter’s Legacy less than a month after it premiered. Fans of Shadow and Bone should not expect a second season to be a sure thing for that chart-topping series. And those looking forward to Sweet Tooth (which premieres tomorrow) better hope it wraps up its first season without a cliffhanger.

Jupiter’s Legacy comes from Mark Millar’s Millarworld which Netlix acquired in 2017 with plans to adapt many of the comics associated with that brand. It was the first series to come from that deal and now the streamer is moving on to other properties as they take an anthology approach to the universe. Next up will be a live-action adaptation of Supercrooks which takes place on the same world as Jupiter’s Legacy. An animated version of that supervillain-focused series was already in the works. Millar had the following to say about the superhero series coming to an end:

Given where we’re going next, we’ve made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga. We’re confident we’ll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great.

Jupiter’s Legacy received mixed reviews upon its premiere, but the early viewing numbers were reportedly strong. The Nielsen Streaming Top 10 has not been released for the week of its debut yet (those numbers come out later today), but I expect it will perform well there. The series ended on a cliffhanger, and according to The Hollywood Reporter Millar will continue the story in comics. But fans of the show would certainly have preferred it continue for a second season on Netflix and likely more. Expect a campaign to save the show, but it will almost surely fall on the deaf ears of the Netflix Red Queen.

Jupiter’s Legacy follows the members of the superhero team Union of Justice as they deal with the next generation of heroes who do not quite live up to the standards they set for themselves over their decades-long crime-fighting career. It stars Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Andrew Horton, Elena Kampouris, and Mike Wade and is based on the comic of the same name created by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely.
