Digital Ratings: Jupiter’s Legacy Starts Off at Number 1, Star Wars The Bad Batch Debuts at Number 7

Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy will not be getting a second season, but at least it will be getting the consolation prize of starting out at Number 1 in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals on the week of its debut. The show topped the charts and had an estimated 696 million minutes of viewing for the week of May 3rd to May 9th. Don’t expect this to change the minds of Netflix execs on the cancellation, though, because they already know exactly what the viewership for the show has been through its first month. Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale slipped to the Number 2 slot for the second week of its fourth season, pulling in 690 million minutes of viewing. Slipping to Number 4 was Netflix’s Shadow and Bone with 555 million minutes of viewing. Disney+’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch had its debut that week and started off at the Number 7 slot with 251 million minutes of viewing. And at the Number 10 slot was Netflix’s Lucifer with 190 million minutes watched. Supernatural remained in the top 10 for acquired shows, improving to Number 5 and bringing in another 380 million minutes of viewing for its encore run on Netflix. You can see the full rankings at this link.

The Nielsen Streaming Ratings rank the shows/movies on Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, and Hulu based on the number of minutes watched during the week by U.S. viewers on television sets (mobile devices are not included at this point). The numbers are extrapolated based on the Nielsen sampling of families who have meters monitoring their viewing habits. Also note, shows with more episodes available will tend to have a higher number of minutes watched.

  1. Netflix (and streaming in general) was once thought to be the savior of genre shows that got prematurely canned. Now it seems to be in the business of cancelling seemingly successful shows without any rhyme or reason.
