Ratings Results of Interest

On Wednesday of last week, Syfy’s new series Resident Alien pulled a 0.22 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.2 million total viewers. The prior week that show had a 0.17 rating for its airing on Syfy plus a 0.12 score for its simulcast on USA. There was not a simulcast this past week, so its numbers are down from the combined score of 0.29, but up from its premiere numbers on Syfy. And a 0.22 rating is the highest single number a scripted original as pulled n the network in over two years, so Resident Alien appears to be off to a good start.

On Sunday, BBC America’s The Watch slipped a tick to a 0.03 rating in the demo with 143K total viewers, keeping that show firmly On the Bubble. The other Sunday genre entries took a break that night rather than air against The Super Bowl. On Friday, MacGyver pulled a 0.52 rating for CBS with 5.2 million total viewers and that one remains on track for a sixth season renewal. On Thursday, Star Trek: Discovery slipped to a 0.16 with 1.6 million total viewers for the final episode of its Season 1 encore run.

On Tuesday, Two Sentence Horror Stories slipped to a 0.06 rating with 496K total viewers, but that one has already been renewed for a third season. The other CW shows airing during the week remained mostly steady with the prior week. On Monday on TNT, Snowpiercer picked up steam to a 0.31 rating with 974K total viewers. That show has already been renewed for a third season, so it is in good shape at this point.

Sci Fi TV News of Note

The CW made its usual blanket renewal announcement this past week, giving the greenlight to new seasons of The Flash, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Legacies, Riverdale, Charmed, Nancy Drew, and Roswell New Mexico. New series Superman & Lois has not been renewed yet, but it did receive two additional episodes for its first season. Black Lightning and Supergirl were previously announced as ending this season . . . Syfy’s supernatural western Wynonna Earp will end its run on the network with the upcoming second half of its fourth season. A fifth season had previously been promised for that show, and its producers will be shopping it around . . . Rick & Morty co-creator Dan Harmon is working on a new animated series for FOX. The currently untitled fantasy comedy is set in mythical ancient Greece and “centers on a flawed family of humans, gods and monsters that tries to run one of the world’s first cities without killing each other”. Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix, Streaming Part 4, Status – Cancelled): This show has proven popular for Netflix, and the debut of Part 4 placed in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10. But that service does not have much interest in keeping its non-animated originals going more than about four seasons.  Whether fans will make a Call to Action on the social networks for this one to move to another venue (most likely The CW as this was originally considered a spin-off from Riverdale), remains to be seen.

Pennyworth (EPIX, Airing 2nd Season, Status – Renewal Possible): This Batman prequel series received very little promotion from its network prior to its second season return. Nielsen does not report ratings results for EPIX, so it is hard to gauge the status of this one. But perhaps this one could stick around for a third season. This show resumes new episodes on March 7th.
