The Witcher Will Be Continuing to a Fifth Season

Netflix has not made an official announcement, but according to the casting directing of The Witcher the show will be continuing to a fifth season. It was already renewed for a fourth year in advance of its Season 3 premiere (which will be on June 29th), and now it appears that yet another season of the show is planned. Sophie Holland made the following comment in a recent interview with Deadline:

We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five.

That news does not come as a huge surprise as The Witcher is one of the most-watched originals on Netflix and it has already produced the two spin-offs Blood Origin and Nightmare of the Wolf. Streaming originals typically do not last many seasons because the new subscriptions they draw tend to diminish over time, but there are exceptions to that like this show and Stranger Things. It is possible that Netflix could be looking at wrapping up The Witcher around its fifth year like it is doing with Stranger Things, but more spin-offs from the franchise are currently planned. Note that the fifth season could be revoked at some point, especially if the writers’ strike carries on too long or if the major casting change planned for the fourth season proves unpopular, but at this point it appears that the show will get to at least the fifth-year mark. Should it continue beyond that, it will be one of just a few originals to have an extended tenure at Netflix.

The Witcher already had its fourth season return set, so the fifth-year announcement does not add to the renewal column for the current season. The Cancellation/Renewal Score presently stands at 35 renewed (42% of shows tracked) vs. 34 cancelled and ending. The Witcher follows the monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia who is driven by destiny to help the Crown Princess Ciri, a young girl who possesses magical powers and who is on the run after her kingdom is sacked by invaders. It stars Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Eamon Farren, Anya Chalotra, and Joey Batey and is based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski.
