The Sandman Renewed for 2nd Season at Netflix

It’s one down, one up at Netflix. That streamer just cancelled the fantasy series Fate: The Winx Saga this week, but late yesterday it announced that The Sandman will be coming back for a second season. That should have been a foregone conclusion based on viewership numbers, but Fate: The Winx Saga performed pretty well in its second season and it got the “Off With Their Heads!” verdict from the Netflix Red Queen. The Sandman‘s creator Neil Gaiman had previously warned that the show needed to pull in huge viewership numbers to justify its cost, and it did just that. It spent seven weeks in the Netflix Top 10–three at Number–topping out at 128 million hours views for its best week. It also spent six weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings–two at Number 1–with 1.4 billion minutes viewed for its best week (the two services use different methodologies for measuring viewership). Netflix execs took their time in making a renewal decision, and if they had decided to cancel the show they would have likely had a revolt on their hand because it has been widely acclaimed. There had been rumors of cancellation floating around social media, and then the DC Comics official Twitter site accidentally leaked the renewal news. Netflix has since confirmed that and the second season will likely arrive late-2023 or early-2024.

The Sandman follows Morpheus who is one of the powerful beings known as the Seven Endless and who is the master of dreams. He is captured in 1916 and held captive for over a hundred years, and when he gains his freedom he sets about trying to restore order to his realm. It stars Tom Sturridge, Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie and it is based on the DC Comics series created by Neil Gaiman.
