Fate: The Winx Saga Cancelled by Netflix After Two Seasons

The Netflix Red Queen has declared “Off With Their Heads!” once again and the fantasy entry Fate: The Winx Saga is the latest show to fall as the streamer has cancelled it after two seasons. Showrunner Brian Young made the announcement on Instagram today:

This is not fun news to share, but Netflix [has] decided not to move forward with season three of Fate: The Winx Saga. This is especially tough because I know how many of you loved this season. It’s a heartbreaking silver lining, but a silver lining all the same. I’m so proud of everyone who worked on the show, and so happy we got to tell the stories we did. Our cast and crew put in a ton of hard work creating this world and these characters. I’m grateful for each and every one of them, and for all of you for watching. It’s been an amazing four years. Hopefully we’ll see each other again in the future.

You have to ask what it is that Netflix wants these days, because apparently placing in the Top 10 for multiple weeks and pulling in millions of hours of viewing is not enough. The second season spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 rising as high as Number 2 with 61 million hours viewed that week. It also spent two weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals rising as high as Number 4 with 675 million minutes viewed (the two services use different methods to track viewing). It sure seems like that would have been enough to get the show to a third season, especially considering that is the standard run for a succcessful streaming original these days and it gives the show the chance to wrap up its storylines.

Fate: The Winx Saga is based on the globally popular animated series Winx Club, and perhaps there were licensing issues and/or costs with carrying it into a third season. But it sure seems like such a popular property deserved better than to be cut short after two years. I would expect that fans will lobby for this one to shift to a different venue, but Netflix likely has the rights locked up for at least two years. If fans make enough noise, though, perhaps a deal can be worked out with another provider.

Fate: The Winx Saga follows five young women who become friends while attending the magical boarding school Alfea in the Otherworld. They must learn how to use their magical powers while also dealing with interpersonal relationships as well threats from supernatural beings. It stars Abigail Cowen, Hannah van der Westhuysen, Precious Mustapha, Eliot Salt, and Elisha Applebaum.
