Breaking News: The Twilight Zone Reboot Has Been Cancelled After Two Seasons

ViacomCBS announced the plans yesterday for their rebranded streaming service Paramount+ (previously CBS All Acces), and those do not include a third season of the Twilight Zone reboot. The news does not come as a huge surprise since there has been no word on the show since its second season aired in June of last year. I had moved it to Bubble status a couple of months back, figuring the lack of news was a sign that the streamer was not interested in keeping the show going for another season. When it first arrived in 2019, the premiere episode delivered all-time high viewership for CBS All Access. But apparently viewer interest had dropped off notably by the second season, and ViacomCBS has decided not to keep it in their future plans. The producers made the following statement about the show coming to an end:

We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. After 20 unique episodes, we have told the stories that we wanted to tell, and CBS All Access was gracious in their understanding of our decision. It was an honor and a privilege to bring audiences a modern re-imagining of Rod Serling’s iconic creation.

That suggests that they did not plan to carry it beyond those twenty episodes, but it sure seems that the streamer would have found a way to keep it going if the viewership was high enough. Jordan Peele executive produced the series and acted as the host and guest stars across its two seasons included Morena Baccarin, Steven Yeun, John Cho, Seth Rogen, George Takei, and more. And while the current incarnation is ending after two seasons, expect this one to be back at some point in the future. This is the third television revival of the franchise and its anthology format lends itself well to reboots.

We are still waiting to hear word on quite a number of other genre shows like HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Netflix’s Cursed, and Hulu’s The Hardy Boys, so stay tuned for more announcements.
