Breaking News: Helstrom Cancelled by Hulu After One Season

Coming as no surprise, Hulu has cancelled its supernatural series Helstrom— based on the Marvel comics characters–after one season. That show is one of the last productions that started off at Marvel Television before that division was shut down and Marvel Studios pulled the TV projects under its wing (the animated MODOK series is still in the works as far as I know). Helstrom definitely had the feel of an orphaned series and did not appear to have a connection to the Marvel Universe (or any references were excised from the final cut). The series was also not received well by critics, currently holding only a 27% Fresh Rating at Rotten Tomatoes (though it does have an 86% Audience Score). It maxed out at a rank of 26 on IMDb’s MOVIEmeter (more on those scores at this link) and averaged a rank of 105 across its first four weeks after it debuted on October 16th. I usually do not make predictions beyond Renewal Possible for shows on the streaming service seeing as I don’t have much data by which to gauge them. But I had this show On the Bubble to start with because it appeared its release on Hulu was little more than a burn-off run. Whether fans will make any attempt to save the show remains to be seen.

Helstrom follows the demon hunters Daimon and Ana Helstrom who were born to a serial but who now try to protect humanity from supernatural beings. It stars Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, Elizabeth Marvel, Robert Wisdom, and Ariana Guerra and it is based on the Marvel characters created originally by Roy Thomas and Gary Friedrich.
