Breaking News: Castle Rock Cancelled by Hulu After Two Seasons

The season-long horror anthology series Castle Rock has been officially cancelled by Hulu after two seasons, although it has been a forgone conclusion for some time that the show would not return for a third year. The series premiered in Summer of 2018 to a warm reception from critics and viewers and continued to draw strong marks when it returned for its second season in October 2019. But there had been no word on a third season for several months and I moved the show to Bubble status this past Summer. According to Deadline, the decision was made a while ago, but only just now announced. The now-standard line of increased costs during the COVID environment was given as one of the reasons for the cancellation. The show comes from Warner Bros. TV which is now focusing its content on new streamer HBO Max, but there is no indication that the series could make a jump over to that platform. Each season tells a self-contained story, so it did not leave viewers on a cliffhanger ending.  Whether fans will stage a Call to Action to try and convince HBO Max or another venue to pick it up remains to be seen.

Castle Rock is a season-long horror anthology that takes place in the Stephen King-verse, drawing upon characters, locations, and concepts from his stories. The first season centers on the Shawshank State Penitentiary while the second season brings in the Annie Wilkes character who was central to King’s novel (and movie) Misery. Among the actors that appeared on the show are André Holland, Melanie Lynskey, Bill Skarsgård, Lizzy Caplan, Paul Sparks, and Barkhad Abdi.

We are still waiting for word on 2019-20 season shows like HBO’s Lovecraft Country, AMC’s Dispatches from Elsewhere, and Netflix’s Cursed, so stay tuned for more announcements.
