Ratings Results of Interest

On Sunday, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead set a new series low, slipping to a 0.31 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.3 million total viewers.  While those are still passable numbers for a basic cable series and I believe this one could still come back for a seventh season, I’m guessing the creative team has been told to approach this as the show’s final season just in case.  Leading out from that, The Walking Dead: World Beyond slipped to a 0.18 rating with 742K total viewers.  It has already been renewed for a second season.

Over on The CW, Pandora pulled another 0.0 rating when rounded to a tenth of a point (I’m counting it as a 0.04 for calculation purposes).  The total viewers on that show also dropped to a series low of 224K.  That one is an acquisition for the network and international syndication may help keep it viable.  But it definitely appears to be fading in Prime Time at this point.

On Thursday, The CW’s Supernatural slipped to a 0.2 rating with 908K total viewers as it heads toward its series finale in just a few weeks. In the lead-out hour, The Outpost held steady at a 0.1 rating with 438K total viewers. Over on CBS, the Star Trek: Discovery encore run had a 0.2 rating with 1.4 million total viewers after returning from a week off.

On Tuesday, The CW’s encore run of Swamp Thing improved to a 0.2 rating with 848K total viewers. I believe that show needs to remain at least around that level for the network to consider picking it up for a second season. Over on FOX, recently cancelled neXt was preempted for a second week in a row due to the World Series and it will be preempted again this week for election coverage.

Cancellation Announcements:

FOX has cancelled its AI-drama neXt after the show only aired two episodes. That one was originally planned as a mid-season entry last year, but its premiere date was pushed and it was looking like it might get shifted to the Summer schedule, which effectively would translate into a burn-off run. When the production shutdowns hit, though, FOX execs decided to hold the show until Fall realizing they would likely have a shortage of scripted programming. But it debuted to only mediocre ratings, and the network was quick to pull the plug. You can read more about the cancellation at this link.

Also sent to the Network Executioner last week was Peacock’s Brave New World. That series is based on Aldous Huxley’s book of the same name and the first season covered the story from the novel. There was still a chance it would continue beyond that point, but the NBC streaming service decided not to bring the show back for a second season. More on that at this link.

Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

The Mandalorian (Disney+, Streaming 2nd Season, Status – Renewed): This show has proven quite popular for the Disney+ streaming service thus far and work on the third season has already begun. Expect this one to stick around for at least a few more years.

Dispatches from Elsewhere (AMC, 1st Season Ended, Status – Cancellation Likely): The numbers for this show dropped off notably throughout its first season despite a strong lead-in from Better Call Saul. At this point, it seems unlikely it will return for a second season unless it has international financing and/or syndications deals which would keep it viable.
