Cancellation Watch Breaking News: CBS Renews MacGyver for a Fifth Season

Coming as no surprise, CBS has announced that its spy-fi series MacGyver will be returning for a fifth season. It was looking like there might be a delay on the announcements for CBS shows when the network pushed its Upfronts to the week of May 18th. But all of the renewal and cancellation announcements were made today. MacGyver had a mid-season start for its fourth year in February and has seen decent ratings, especially for a Friday show. The show appeared to be on track for a renewal, and when it was announced that the fourth season would be cut short due to the Coronavirus-related shutdowns, the renewal seemed almost certain. CBS will want the show to get past the 80 episode mark to make it more attractive to the syndication market. With the fifth season renewal, the show should surpass 100 episodes which makes it even more valuable to syndicators. The last completed fourth season episode will air this coming Friday, and the remaining episodes will be pushed to next year.

MacGyver follows Angus “Mac” MacGyver who works for a secret government organization using his extensive scientific knowledge and quick-thinking to solve the cases he is given. It stars Lucas Till, Tristin Mays, Justin Hires, Meredith Eaton, and Henry Ian Cusick and is based on the 1985 series of the same name.

There should be plenty of renewal and cancellation announcements this week and possibly into next as the networks prepare for their Upfronts when they will unveil their schedules for next season.
