Cancellation Watch Breaking News: The Five-Season Wall Holds as Syfy Cancels The Magicians

No scripted series has lasted more than five seasons on Syfy and that will hold as the network has cancelled its supernatural series The Magicians which is currently in its fifth season. I have been predicting since last Fall that this could be the final season for the show because of the five-year wall. And when The Magicians returned in January with numbers down notably from its prior year, there definitely seemed to be plenty of doubt about the show’s fate. TVLine has reported that the show will be ending and executive producer Sera Gamble had the following to say about its fate:

“We had the sense going into this season that Syfy… was kind of hitting the point of ‘The cup is full and there’s no more room,’” and as such a fitting ending was crafted. After shopping the series to possible new homes, EP John McNamara said, “None of them seemed in the end like a perfect financial or creative fit. And so we reluctantly just decided, ‘Well at least we have this season finale that was crafted to also be a series finale.’ It was kind of always going to pull double duty.”

Another Syfy show that will be ending with its fifth season is Van Helsing which was renewed for a final year this past Fall. Wynonna Earp is heading into its fourth season and that one could end this year or with a fifth and final season. The series finale for The Magicians will be on April 1st.  Where fans will lobby for the show to perhaps convince another venue to pick it up, remains to be seen.

The Magicians follows the students of Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy who have demonstrated a special talent for magic and who are learning how to develop those abilities. It stars Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta and is based on the Lev Grossman novel of the same name.

The current season will be winding down soon and we should expect to hear word on the fate of shows such as USA’s The Purge, ABC’s Emergence, and Syfy’s The Magicians.
