Sci Fi TV Listings for the Week of December 30th: Doctor Who New Year’s Special, Premieres for Young Justice, Gotham, and More

Weekly roundup of science fiction and fantasy shows (as well as movies/specials of note) on the Prime Time TV schedule, also including programs that may be of interest to genre fans. Air dates and times subject to change without notice.

The Winter break did not last too long because shows are already returning with new episodes this week and we have a few of Mid-Season premieres as well.  To start things off, Doctor Who airs its final Season 11 episode which is a New Year’s special (since there was no Christmas ep this year).  That hour-and-a-half episode airs Tuesday at 8 PM EST and here is the official description:

As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring from across the centuries of Earth’s history. Will the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz be able to overcome this threat to Planet Earth?

Also on New Year’s, Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events has its third (and final) season debut, and FOX’s The Gifted returns from Hiatus.  On Thursday, FOX’s Gotham is back for its final season and The Orville has its timeslot premiere (following its season premiere on December 30th after football).  On Friday, Young Justice returns from a long absence for its third season on the DC Universe streaming service.  And CBS shows MacGyver and God Friended Me both resume new episodes this week on Friday and Sunday respectively.  There are more premieres and shows returning over the next few weeks and you can see the full Mid-Season schedule at this link.

Note: Last week’s premiere of Black Mirror was not the full fifth season bow, just the special interactive episode “Bandersnatch”. But Season 5 is on the way in 2019 and we will post its debut date once it is announced.
