Earlier this year, Disney+ extended a second-season renewal to its MCU series Wonder Man, but now the streamer has reversed that decision, leaving the show cancelled after one season. No reason has been given for the change in direction, and word is that a writers’ room was never opened for the second year, and the people who were previously involved have been released from their contracts. Wonder Man, which released all of its episodes at one time, entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at the Number 8 slot for the week of its premiere, pulling in an estimated 618 million minutes of viewing, but it dropped out after that. The show received high marks from critics and viewers, currently holding a 91% Tomatometer Score (based on critics’ reviews) and an 87% Popcornmeter Score (based on audience feedback) on Rotten Tomatoes. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II received an Emmy nomination for the title role (he also previously received an Emmy nod for the HBO series Watchmen), and while the show did wrap up its main storylines, it set up a whole new chapter as the season ended. Creator and showrunner Andrew Guest had the following to say about the cancellation on Instagram:
Marvel has cancelled Wonder Man. So proud of the show we made. So grateful to have worked with [Destin Daniel Cretton, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II] and Sir Ben Kingsley. Want to thank everyone who watched and all the critics who supported us.
And Yahya Abdul-Mateen II chimed in as well:
Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2. (And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww! That’s life, right? Everything will shake out.
Series creator Destin Daniel Cretton had the following to say about the cancellation:
I love that show to death. If it were up to me, we would be making that show. And I do believe that if – and I know this sounds weird – but if it were up to Kevin [Feige], we would be doing that show.
And I’m just talking, I don’t fully understand the business of streaming, but if the business was right, we would be making that show because I know [Feige] loves that show as much as I do. It’s a bummer. I’m heartbroken about it. But I need to fully understand the why.
Wonder Man was originally pegged as a miniseries, but then Disney+ made the surprise announcement that it would continue to a second season. The streamer has approached most of its live-action MCU entries as one-offs, with Daredevil: Born Again and Loki as the only shows so far to continue beyond their first seasons. WandaVision did get the spin-offs Agatha All Along as well as the upcoming VisionQuest, and the animated What If…? did run for three seasons. Wonder Man definitely had more story to tell, but according to an unnamed source, the characters could appear in other MCU projects, possibly providing more resolution for them.
This announcement shifts the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2025-26 to 15 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (21% of shows tracked) vs. 37 renewed (51%). Wonder Man follows Simon Williams, a struggling actor who has had superpowers he does not understand since he was young and who is chasing the role of his dreams in an upcoming superhero film. Blending Hollywood satire with superhero action, the show explores fame, identity, and the blurred line between performance and reality as Simon navigates the many pitfalls of the entertainment industry. It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Ben Kingsley, X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, and Joe Pantoliano, and it is based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name.
