Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix, Status: Renewed): The second season of this live-action reboot of the animated classic premiered last week, though it saw a notable drop in viewership from its first year. It hit the Number 2 slot in the Netflix Top 10 with 64.6 million hours views across 8.7 million households which was down from the 153.4 million hours for its series premiere across 21.2 million households. That is definitely a significant decline in viewership, though the long wait between seasons of over two years may have played a part in that. The numbers are still decent for a Netflix original and this one was already renewed for a third and final season which is already in production, so it should be safe.
Harley Quinn (HBO Max, Status: Ended): It has been over a year since the fifth season of this show wrapped up, and there has been no word on its fate including at the recent Annecy International Film Festival where quite a number of announcements were made by DC Studios on new and returning animated shows. Kaley Cuoco has expressed an interest in retruning for more seasons, but showrunner Dean Lorey has said that the creative team wrote the Seson 5 finale with the uncertainty of a renewal in mind and wanted it to provide closure in case the show did not continue. With nothing in the works over a year after the fifth season wrapped up, I am going to consider this one ended at this point. Fans may want to make some noise on the social networks if they do want the show to return at some point.
House of the Dragon (HBO, Status: Renewed): This Game of Thrones prequel series had its third season debut over a week ago and it pulled in 21.5 million views globally across HBO and HBO Max over its first three days according to stats provided by the premium cable channel. That is down by 8% from its second season premiere, but still decent numbers for a big-budget show like this. House of the Dragon has already been renewed for a fourth season, and it will be wrapping up at that point.
Spider-Noir (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This dark re-imagining of the Spider-Man character made it to the Number 2 slot for the week of its premiere, pulling in an estimated 851 million minutes of viewing. The is not quite up to the level of The Boys, and this show is likely expensive to produce, but it has been receiving good marks from critics and viewers (currently holding a 91% Tomatometer Score and 92% Popcornmeter Score on Rotten Tomatoes), so it could return for another season or so.
X-Men 97 (Disney+, Status: Renewed): This animated series which acts as a direct sequel to the 1990s X-Men show has its second season premiere today, and it has already been renewed through a fourth season. Work has already begun on the third year, and that is expected to arrive at some point in 2027.
The Testaments (Hulu, Status: Renewed): This spin-off from The Handmaid’s Tale made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at the Number 10 slot for the week of its finale, pulling in an estimated 377 million minutes of viewing. Those numbers are definitely lower than what the parent series was seeing, but this one has already been renewed for a second season.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:
Netflix announced last week that its latest Duffer Bros. series The Boroughs would not be continuing to a second season, and that is now factored into the score for the current season. I had not previously included the renewal for X-Men ’97, so that is added now as well. The current score stands at 14 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (24% of shows tracked) vs. 35 renewed (59%). Note that Harley Quinn ending will count back to the 2024-25 season, and the early Season 6 renewal for Amazon’s Invincible announced last week will count for the coming 2026-27 season. Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
| Show Count | 59 | ||
| Cancelled | 6 | 10.2% | |

| Renewed | 35 | 59.3% | |
| On the Bubble | 2 | 3.4% | |
| Renewal Possible | 8 | 13.6% | |
