The Voyage Continues as Both Star Trek Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks Get Early Renewals

The voyage will continue for two Star Trek shows as Paramount+ has announced a third-season renewal for Strange New Worlds and a fifth-season renewal for Lower Decks. Discovery will be ending with its fifth season and Picard is in its third and final season, but the streamer is sticking with the franchise by handing out these early renewals (each for ten episode seasons) and has more shows potentially in the works. The second season of Strange New Worlds has been given a release date of June 15th and the fourth season of Lower Decks is expected to arrive late Summer or early Fall. The news does not come as a huge surprise as those two have been among the best-received Trek shows on the streaming service, and word is that all of the shows in the franchise continue to perform well at Paramount+. (That streamer is not included in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, though, so I have not seen any actual numbers.) There have also been talks for some time about a Section 31 spin-off series from Discovery, and a recent rumor suggests that a Dominion War series could be in the works.  In addition, the animated Star Trek: Prodigy series has a second season set to arrive later in 2023, so the rumblings about franchise fatigue do not seem to be impacting the decision-making around the Trek shows at this time.

Star Trek: Lower Decks had its fourth season secured when its third year aired at the beginning of the 2022-23 season, so it already counts as renewed in the current Cancellation/Renewal score. Strange New Worlds adds one more to that tally bringing it to 25 sci fi and fantasy show renewed so far (32% of shows tracked) vs. 28 cancelled and ending (36%). You can see the detailed list of shows from the current season and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a prequel series that follows the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the days when Captain Christopher Pike, his first officer Number One, and his science officer Mr. Spock were in command of the ship. It stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, and Celia Rose Gooding,

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated comedy that takes place in the same timeline as The Next Generation and focuses on the junior crew members who work on the lower decks of the USS Cerritos and must deal with the mundane operations of a starship. The voice cast includes Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, and Jerry O’Connell.
