Star Trek: Discovery Will End With Its Upcoming Fifth Season

The voyage will be coming to an end for Star Trek: Discovery as that show will be wrapping up with its upcoming fifth season. Chief programming officer at Paramount Streaming Tanya Giles had the following to say about the show coming to an end:

The series and its incredible cast and creatives ushered in a new era for Star Trek when it debuted over six years ago, embracing the future of streaming with serialized storytelling, bringing to life deep and complex characters that honor Gene Roddenberry’s legacy of representing diversity and inclusion, and pushing the envelope with award-winning world-building. This final season will see our beloved crew take on a new adventure, and we can’t wait to celebrate the series’ impact on the franchise leading up to its final season early next year.

The Star Trek prequel series became the flagship of CBS All Access (later rebranded to Paramount+) when it launched in 2017 and has performed well in viewership across its first four seasons, though the reactions from fans have been mixed. A specific reason was not given for why the show would be ending, but Paramount+ is going through some cost-cutting (as are most streaming services) and the sfx-heavy Star Trek shows are certainly expensive to produce. With Star Trek: Picard ending this year and Discovery wrapping up in 2024, that will leave Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Prodigy as the remaining active shows in the franchise, though more are in the works.

Deadline gives the following synopsis for the fifth season which is set to premiere in 2024:

The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well — dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

The show will count as part of the 2023-24 season, so this announcement will not impact the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season. Those numbers presently stand at 24 renewals (35% of shows tracked) vs. 26 cancelled and ending shows (38%). 1. It’s about time that this amateurish anti-Star Trek was put out of my misery. It’s way too nihilistic and narcissistic, yet full of over-emotive daytime soap opera acting. I hope that the crew never makes it back from whatever future century they got lost in; that way they can no longer retcon away everything Spock ever did in order to prop up Michael Burnham. If the Cardassians ever showed Picard any propaganda films during his interrogation in “Chain of Command”, they were probably episodes of Star Trek Discovery. Alex Kurtzman deserves this cancellation… no, real Star Trek fans deserve this. This is a cause for celebration.

  2. I’m with Joss. Checked out after season 2. I just couldn’t take the sort of nerd-poser garbage writing on that show – and that’s not even getting into the woke-fest aspects. How this show lasted 5 seasons is a mystery of epic proportions.

  3. Good riddance. Trek needs to get away from all that unprofessional snivelling, hugging, quipping, emotional incontinence. That show (like the first two seasons of Picard btw) was an abomination in almost every department on- and off-screen, but a very convincing simulation of greatness. (Convincing for stupid people.) Saru and Georgiou were interesting character, played by good actors, and I loved seeing Cronenberg in a Trek show, but that’s just not enough.
