Cancellation Watch: La Brea Improves for Season Finale, The Last of Us Passes One Billion Minutes of Viewing, and More

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.  For the streaming ratings, see our weekly Digital Ratings posts.

The number of shows airing and streaming is already on a downturn (watch for an upcoming post on that) so I will be merging the Digital Ratings with the Cancellation Watch posts again. These will continue to come out on Tuesday or Wednesday if there are ratings delays.

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

NBC’s La Brea wrapped up its second season last week and improved slightly to a 0.23 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.8 million total viewers across the two episodes that aired that night. That still has the show performing below other dramas on NBC, but it has already been renewed for a third season which could be its last. Over on The CW, The Winchesters slipped to a 0.05 rating with 489K total viewers for its penultimate Season 1 episode as it remains On the Bubble.

On Wednesday, Syfy’s The Ark improved slightly to a 0.06 rating in the demo with 340K total viewers.  Those numbers aren’t great, but it has been tracking at about the same levels as Reginald the Vampire which did get renewed.  It remains On the Bubble for now, but fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to bring the show more attention.  Over on ABC, supernatural comedy Not Dead Yet dropped to a 0.29 rating which is not a good sign for that show.

On Sunday, HBO’s The Last of Us slipped to a 0.30 rating with one million total viewers for its second to last Season 1 episode.  That show has already been renewed for a second year.

Nielsen Streaming Top 10

HBO’s The Last of Us continued to improve its digital viewing numbers the week of January 30th to February 5th. It jumped up one slot in the chart for acquired shows to Number 2 and it surpassed one billion minutes of viewing. In the chart for originals, Netflix’s Lockwood & Co. improved to Number 3 with 623 million minutes of viewing. That one has already dropped out of the Netflix charts, though, which is not a good sign. Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the streaming charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the Week of Jan-30 to Feb-5

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

As announced last week, Star Trek: Discovery will be ending with its upcoming fifth year, but that does not arrive until the 2023-24 season. FOX’s animated fantasy comedy Krapopolis received an early renewal for a third year, but the show’s premiere got shifted to the 2023-24 season, so it gets removed from this season’s list of shows. The Cancellation/Renewal Score currently stands at 24 renewed (35% of shows tracked) vs. 26 cancelled and ending (38%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 69
Cancelled 14 20.3%
Ending 12 17.4% 37.7%
Renewed 24 34.8%
On the Bubble 8 11.6%
Renewal Possible 11 15.9%
