Netflix Has Cancelled The Midnight Club After One Season

Netflix’s horror series The Midnight Club will not go forward on the streamer as it has been cancelled after one season.  That announcement follows the news that executive producers Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy will be jumping ship to Amazon’s Prime Video.  Whether their departure led to the cancellation or vice versa is uncertain at this point.  Those two had previously produced The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass for Netflix.  The Haunting was considered a season-long anthology series, but Netflix decided not to continue that into a third season despite good viewership for the show.  Midnight Mass was intended as a mini-series.  Flanagan and Macy also produced the upcoming The Fall of the House of Usher for Netflix which should premiere at some point in 2023.

The Midnight Club was intended as a multi-season series and it posted decent viewership for the streamer, rising as high as Number 3 in the Netflix Top 10 during its second week with just under fifty million hours viewed.  But it only remained in the charts for three weeks which is less than what the streamer prefers for its originals.  Flanagan and Macy may try to continue the series over on Prime Video at some point, but Netflix likely holds the rights for at least two years.  And since it has a relatively young cast, it may be difficult to carry the series over after a delay of two years or longer.  But fans may want to try a Call to Action on the social networks to see if they can spark Amazon’s interest in saving the show.

The Midnight Club focuses on eight terminally ill young adults who reside in the Brightcliffe Home hospice. They tell scary stories every night and they have a pact that the first among them to die will try to communicate with the others from beyond the grave.  It stars Iman Benson, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Annarah Cymone, and Chris Sumpter and it is based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Pike.
