HBO Has Renewed House of the Dragon for a Second Season

Coming as no surprise, HBO has given a second season renewal to its Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon.  That show premiered this past weekend and pulled in nearly ten million viewers for its first episode across all platforms.  And according to HBO, that number has increased to twenty million with encore runs and digital and delayed viewing throughout the week.  It counts as the best premiere ever for an HBO original, and it has definitely provided a boost to the linear viewing of the premium cable company at a time when people are flocking to streaming.  George R.R. Martin has praised the series, saying that the cast and crew “have done some magnificent work” on the production.  GRRM has recently distanced himself from the Game of Thrones television adaptation, claiming that he had little involvement after the fourth season.  Fans were unhappy with the way that show ended, and GRRM’s endorsement of the new show may have helped convince disillusioned viewers to return to the franchise.  House of the Dragon will have ten episodes in its first year and will likely target Summer or Fall 2023 for the arrival of its second season.

House of the Dragon takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of the House of Targaryen.  It stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, and Steve Toussaint and is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood.
