Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
VisionQuest (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): I have not seen the Nielsen numbers for this series yet since those run on a delay of several weeks, but according to TheRatingsGuide.com, the series debuted at Number 1 on the Disney+ chart and has held onto that slot. This is planned as a mini-series, so a second season is unlikely. But if viewership remains strong, perhaps they will add another entry to the Wanda/Vision saga (which began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along), perhaps focusing on the Tommy Maximoff character.
Below (Netflix, Status: Mini-Series): This eco-horror series held at the Number 1 slot in the Netflix charts for a second week in a row, improving its numbers to 86.4 million hours viewed across 21.2 million accounts. It counts as the most-watched original on that streaming service in the 2026-27 season so far based on average hours watched and average views. It was intended as a mini-series, but it did leave open the possibility of continuing the story, and with these numbers, Netflix execs may be considering that.
Lanterns (HBO, Status: Renewal Possible): The fate of HBO’s Lanterns is still up in the air, but DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran has said that a decision will be made by the end of the year. Following are his comments about the show:
If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season.
That show drew decent viewership during its eight-episode first season run, though maybe a little below expectations based on the cost of the series. It has also received mixed reviews from viewers, especially following the season finale, but critics have given it good marks. Fans should certainly make some noise in support of the show on the social networks to bring it more attention and improve its chances of renewal.
Crystal Lake (Peacock, Status: Renewal Possible): This Friday the 13th prequel series hit the Number 1 slot for Peacock with its debut and remained there the next day according to TheRatingsGuide.com. The showrunners do have a second season planned for this one, though Peacock has not been particularly supportive of its genre originals. We will have to see how it tracks in the coming weeks, but at this point, it seems to be off to a good start.
