Ratings Results of Interest:

Syfy’s new zombie-pocalypse series Day of the Dead had its official premiere on Friday, but only pulled a 0.06 rating based on same-day viewing in the 18-49 demographic with 277K total viewers. Those numbers may have been impacted by the “sneak peak” of the episode that aired earlier in the week after the premiere of the Chucky TV series. The early release pulled a 0.09 rating with 272K total viewers on Syfy and a 0.05 score with 166K total viewers for the simulcast on Syfy. In any case, this series–which has not received much promotion from its network–is definitely not off to a strong start. Seeing as SurrealEstate was just cancelled after averaging a 0.06 rating during its first season (see below), Day of the Dead has very little leeway and I will move it to Bubble status if the numbers do not improve next week.

On Thursday on CBS, the supernatural comedy Ghosts improved with its second episode, pulling a 0.61 rating with 5.3 million total viewers. That show is off to a good start at this point and could be looking at a second season if it holds around these levels.  Over on The CW, Legacies had its fourth season premiere with a 0.06 rating and 326K total viewers. Those are down from its Season 3 numbers, but I still like its chances of sticking around for a fifth season. On Sunday, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead had a 0.26 rating with 1.1 million total viewers for its Season 7 premiere. That is down from its sixth year average and this one could be on final season watch. I covered the premieres from earlier in the week in Friday’s Sci Fi TV Update post, and following are the ratings results for all the sci fi and fantasy shows from the prior week. Renewal and Cancellation Announcements:

In just the past few days, we have heard three renewal announcements along with two cancellations of sci fi/fantasy shows.  HBO Max announced three renewals at the DC FanDome event this past Saturday, with both Doom Patrol and Titans getting a fourth season nod, and the Batman prequel series Pennyworth getting a third season.  That latter show previously aired on the cable net EPIX, but all of its seasons will be moving over to HBO Max.  Y: The Last Man, which is streaming on Hulu under the FX on Hulu banner, will not be continuing to a second season.  That show suffered from behind-the-scenes issues while in production and that may have contributed to its cancellation.  It wraps up its first season on November 1st.  And the supernatural series SurrealEstate will not continue to a second season on Syfy according to creator and showrunner George R. Olson.  That one is being shopped around, though.

Sci Fi TV Development:

HBO Max has officially given the greenlight to the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader which will come from executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. The announcement was made at the DC FanDome event and Timm had the following to say about the new series:

My elevator pitch of this show is that it’s more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series. My ideas was to say, ‘OK it’s 1990 again, I get to do what I want this time, and I have J.J. and Matt backing me up.

Executive producer James Tucker also added:

In Bruce’s word, in this new iteration, it’s just Batman right now. The Justice League doesn’t exist, there aren’t any other superheroes. It’s Batman. You’re watching this lone figure swimming through the cesspool of Gotham. It’s Batman, alone.

The new series is set for a 2022 premiere. The original Batman: The Animated Series is currently streaming on HBO Max.

  1. Loved the concept of SurrealEstate. It had great story lines and all the cast complimented one another. Something different, that made you impatient for the next episode. It’s a shame SciFi doesnt feel the same way. I hope it finds a new home with someone else, and quickly. I loved the show!!!
