Cancellation Watch: Manifest Could Fly Again as NBC, Netflix Reconsider Their Stance

Do fan campaigns work? Well, they helped NBC’s Timeless get a second season and a finale movie.  The Expanse was saved by Amazon and Lucifer was picked up by Netflix after loyal viewers took up the call to action.  And now it appears that Manifest could be back on course to a fourth season according to a report by Deadline.  Of course, incredibly high viewership numbers always help as well.

Somebody must have knocked some sense into the execs at NBC and Netflix. Or they are finding themselves rather embarrassed by the fact that Manifest has been topping multiple viewershp charts for the last few weeks. And word is that talks are back on for the show to take up flight again. NBC ended up cancelling all of its bubble shows from this past season (Good Girls was the last to fall) and the network also scrapped the planned Law & Order spin-off series  For the Defense, leaving space on the network’s schedule this upcoming season. That network is currently back in talks with Warner Bros TV (the studio that produces the series) about bringing the show back for a fourth season. Netflix is also reportedly talking with WB as well, likely prompted by the fact that encore runs of Manifest‘s first two seasons have set viewership records for the streamer. But don’t discount the influence of fan efforts as they have made plenty of noise since the show was cancelled, and they continue to stump for it.

It would certainly be ironic if NBC and Netflix suddenly found themselves in a bidding war over the show that they so quickly discarded. And I don’t know if there is a possibility that Warner Bros could snub both of them and decide to keep the show to itself and move it to HBO Max (previous licensing deals may preclude that from happening), but there is currently plenty of interest to get Manifest back in the air. It may take a couple of weeks to work things out, but there is definitely some momentum behind this at the moment. Fans should certainly take this as an opportunity to double and triple down on their efforts and continue to keep the show trending on social media. Both NBC and Netflix seem to realize they made a mistake (though they would likely never admit it), but that may get rectified and Manifest just may fly again.

  1. I’m quite suprised by the numbers it’s pulling on netflix.

Is this show any good, worth watching? Fully serialized or more episodic?

    1. Very serialized. I enjoyed the first season and into the second. Got behind on it, though, so I can’t speak to the third season. Based on the fan response, it sure has engaged a lot of viewers.
