Digital Ratings: The Handmaid’s Tale Tops the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, Jupiter’s Legacy Still in the Top 5

The Handmaid’s Tale was one of five genre shows in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals for the week of March 17th to 23rd (six if you count the younger-skewing Lost World: Camp Cretaceous). Hulu’s dystopian series improved to the Number 1 slot and had an estimated 516 million minutes of viewing for the week.  Slipping to Number 3 was Netflix’s cancelled Jupiter’s Legacy which had 405 million minutes of viewing.  Netflix’s Lucifer improved to Number 6 in advance of the premiere of the second half of its fifth season (expect it to place higher in the next set of rankings).  While Shadow and Bone slipped to Number 9 with 199 million minutes of viewing.  Rounding out the Top 10 was Castlevania which had 188 million minutes of viewing.  The Marvel series MODOK premiered on Hulu that week but did not make it into the Top 10 for streaming originals.

In the Top 10 for acquired shows was Supernatural which slipped a little from last week to the Number 8 slot with 298 million minutes of viewing for its encore run on Netflix.  In the Top 10 movies, Zack Snyder’s Army of Darkness shot up to Number 1 for its debut week on Netflix with 913 million minutes of viewing. You can see the full rankings at this link.  Note that starting next week the Digital Ratings will be part of the new weekly Sci Fi TV Update post.

The Nielsen Streaming Ratings rank the shows/movies on Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, and Hulu based on the number of minutes watched during the week by U.S. viewers on television sets (mobile devices are not included at this point). The numbers are extrapolated based on the Nielsen sampling of families who have meters monitoring their viewing habits. Also note, shows with more episodes available will tend to have a higher number of minutes watched.
