Breaking News: Netflix Cancels The Irregulars After One Season

Proving that a dartboard apparently factors into the decision-making of Netflix execs, the streamer has cancelled the highly-watched supernatural drama The Irregulars after only one season. That show started off at Number 2 in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 with its debut in March, and then improved to the Number 1 slot in the second week of its release (bumping The Falcon and the Winter Soldier from the top spot). But apparently that is not enough for Netflix and this one seems to be following the same path as the space-exploration series Away which was cancelled last Fall despite a strong showing in the streaming ratings. I have seen no reason given for the cancellation, so perhaps there are extenuating factors and/or production challenges that led to the show being dropped. But this is a sign that so long at Netflix is the Number 1 streaming service, any show could go at any time even if it is one of the most-watched streaming originals out there.  Especially if the tip of the dart lands near the center of the board. I’m not certain how much of a fanbase this series developed during its short tenure, but if they plan to fight for a second season it will be an uphill battle. Netflix holds the right for its originals for at least two years and has shown little interest in allowing its shows to move to other venues.

The Irregulars follows a group of young people living in Victorian London known as the “Baker Street Irregulars” who investigate supernatural crimes at the behest of Dr. Watson while also searching for Sherlock Holmes. It stars McKell David, Thaddea Graham, Jojo Macari, Harrison Osterfield, and Darci Shaw.

At least The Irregulars received a cancellation notice as other Netflix shows like Cursed and Dragon’s Dogma are still waiting for word on their fates, apparently forgotten by those in charge at Netflix. And as we approach season end, there will be more renewals and cancellations from all of the networks so stay tuned for more breaking news.
