Breaking News: Trickster Cancelled by CBC over Controversy

The Canadian supernatural drama Trickster, which is currently airing in the States on The CW, will not be continuing to a second season as originally planned. That series, which is based on the Eden Robinson novel Son of a Trickster and focuses on the indigenous Haisla people of Kitamaat, British Columbia, premiered up North in Fall 2020 and was renewed for a second season. In the U.S., The CW acquired the six-episode first season and started airing it in January of this year. But CBC has now reversed the show’s renewal, electing to cancel it instead despite the fact that it was named Scripted Series of the Year by Canadian entertainment magazine Playback.

Apparently, a controversy arose around the show when co-creator Michelle Latimer’s claims to indigenous heritage were disputed. Two producers left the show and Latimer later resigned and apologized. CBC claims that they considered continuing on with the series, but ultimately decided to end it after the one season. Though the controversy sure seems like a poor reason to bail on this one. If the network was truly committed to telling Indigenous stories as they claim, they would find a way to keep this one going, especially after it was well-received during its first season. Whether it will be shopped around remains to be seen, and fans will want to make a Call to Action on the social networks to see if they can convince The CW or another venue to keep it going.

Trickster focuses on Jared who is an Indigenous Haisla teenager and small-time drug dealer in Kitimat, British Columbia. As he struggles to provide for his family with his illegal activities, he starts to notice strange and magical events happening around him. It stars Joel Oulette, Crystle Lightning, Craig Lauzon, and Anna Lambe and is currently airing on The CW on Tuesdays at 9 PM EST. Episodes are also available for streaming on the network’s website and app.
