Cancellation Watch Breaking News: TNT Renews Snowpiercer for a Third Season Ahead of Its Second Season Premiere

TNT’s dystopian sci fi series Snowpiercer will not derail during its upcoming second season because the network has cleared the tracks for a third season already. That show debuted in Summer 2020 to decent same-day ratings averaging a 0.32 score based on the 18-49 demographic. It also did well in delayed and digital viewing, reaching a total of 32 million viewers across the network’s linear and digital platforms. Despite that, the third season pickup was definitely not a sure thing seeing as the basic cable networks have been shying away from scripted programming of late. The only other scripted originals for TNT, non-genre entries Animal Kingdom and Claws, are both coming to an end, and it would not have been unreasonable to believe that Snowpiercer would follow. But the network did give it the greenlight for a third year and there is no indication that it will come to an end at that point. The second season debuts this Sunday, January 24th and will run for ten episodes.

Snowpiercer takes place on a future Earth where the impact of climate change has frozen over the surface of the planet. The last survivors live onboard the titular train which is a thousand cars long and split up between first class, second class, third class, and the rest. But after a series of murders occur, the status quo of the train is thrown in doubt. It stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Mickey Sumner, Alison Wright, and Sean Bean and it is based on the 2013 film of the same name directed by Bong Joon-ho.

We are still waiting to hear word on quite a number of other genre shows like HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Netflix’s Cursed, and Apple TV+’s Amazing Stories, so stay tuned for more announcements.
