Breaking News: Netflix Has Renewed Space Force for a Second Season

Fans of Netflix’s comedy series Space Force can breathe now because the show has been renewed by the streamer for a second season. It comes from The Office‘s Greg Daniels who also brought former alum Steve Carrell onboard in the lead role. That series debuted late in Spring 2020 and there had been no word on its fate for several months after that. I had moved the show to Bubble status just recently because Netflix has been in cancelling mode of late, and this is a somewhat costly show due to the high-profile talent in front of and behind the cameras. Production of Space Force will be making the move to Vancouver from Los Angeles for its second season in order to cut costs, and negotiating that change of locale likely caused the delay in the second season announcement.

The series was not well received by critics in its first season, holding only a 38% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes (though it does have a 75% audience score). But since The Office is still a strong performer on Netflix (currently ranking in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10), that may have given some leverage to Daniels and Carrel in negotiations. Production on the second season begins in 2021 with a debut date probably later in the year.

Space Force follows the leaders and personnel of the newly established sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces as they try to get their organization up and running as a respected part of the military. It stars Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, and Lisa Kudrow.

We are still waiting for word on more 2019-20 season shows like HBO’s Lovecraft Country, AMC’s Dispatches from Elsewhere, and Netflix’s Cursed, so stay tuned for more announcements.
