Ratings Results of Interest

Sunday proved to be a good night for sci fi and fantasy shows on cable as all four genre entries landed in the Top 15 among all cable entries. HBO’s Lovecraft Country finished strong with it Year 1 finale pulling a season-high 0.25 rating based on the same-day viewing for the 18-49 with 881K total viewers. HBO shows tend to also see significant gains from digital and delayed viewing as well as encore runs, so this one appears to be on track for a second season renewal. Adult Swim’s Primal improved notably in the ratings after showing up last week with little notice as it posted a 0.25 rating with 464K total viewers. That show has been renewed for a second season.

On AMC on Sunday, Fear the Walking Dead improved from its season premiere, posting a 0.44 rating in the demo with 1.5 million total viewers. It is possible that one could continue into a seventh season, though I would not be surprised if it wrapped up this year. The other Walking Dead entry airing that night, World Beyond, improved a tick to a 0.30 rating with one million total viewers. That one is in the first year of its planned two-season run.

On Thursday, the encore run of the first season of Star Trek: Discovery on CBS improved to a 0.3 rating with 1.8 million total viewers despite competition from duelling presidential candidate town halls. That show just received a fourth season renewal last week. On The CW, Supernatural slipped a bit to a 0.3 rating with 1.1 million total viewers. That show is airing the remaining episodes of its final season.

On Tuesday, FOX’s neXt held at a 0.3 rating with 1.5 million total viewers. It had to contend with football for a second week in a row (the game was delayed to Tuesday due to COVID issues), but its numbers still look less than promising at this point. Over on The CW, the encore run of Swamp Thing slipped to a 0.1 rating with 802K total viewers.

Renewal and Cancellation Announcements

Just announced, Netflix has grounded its mission-to-Mars series Away after one season.  That show has scored well in the digital ratings across its first three weeks of release, so the cancellation comes as quite a surprise, and no reason has been given at this point.  Last week, CBS All Access extended the mission for Star Trek: Discovery to a fourth season. That show is currently streaming its third season and executive producer Alex Kurtzman has claimed that he has several more years planned for the show.

Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

Swamp Thing (CW, Airing 1st Season, Status – Cancelled): This show was previously cancelled by the DC Universe streaming service, but it is getting an encore run on The CW to pad out the network’s Fall schedule. The early numbers look promising, and if the fans make enough noise, perhaps the network will consider picking it up for a second season.

The Boys (Amazon, Returning, Status – Renewed): This series has proven to be quite a hit for Amazon across its first two seasons, and it was announced at Comic-Con that the show has been renewed for a third season. Showrunner Eric Kripke has plans for this one to run at least five years, and that seems like a good bet at this point.
