Ratings Results of Interest

Only two sci fi/fantasy shows air new episodes on the broadcast networks and cable channels this past week, and there will not be much more than that through the rest of September. On Sunday, HBO’s Lovecraft Country slipped to a 0.12 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 630K total viewers. But it was almost certainly impacted by the holiday weekend and should make up the slack with delayed and digital viewing. On Tuesday, The CW’s Dead Pixels remained at a 0.1 rating with 395K total viewers. That one has already been renewed for a second season in Britain.

In other ratings news, Nielsen has released its Streaming Ratings List which is monitoring the shows on the streaming services.  Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy topped the first list as that show appears to be on track for a third season renewal.  More on that at this link.

Cancellation Announcement

Adult Swim’s animated series The Venture Bros. has been cancelled after seven seasons as confirmed by the show’s creator Christopher McCulloch on Twitter:

That show had aired as part of the late-night Adult Swim animation block for seventeen years, typically with long breaks between each season. The reason for the cancellation was not given, but Adult Swim issued a statement saying that the still “want more Venture Bros. and have been working with Jackson and Doc to find another way to continue the Venture Bros. story”. According to Variety, one option would be for the show to move to HBO Max, but that is far from a certainty at this point.

Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

The Umbrella Academy (Netflix, Streaming, Status – Renewal Likely): This is one of Netflix’s most-watched shows and there are rumors that the streamer has already given the greenlight for a third season (but there has been no official announcement). Consider a third and fourth season a good bet at this point, and maybe this will be one of the shows to break down the Netflix four-season wall.

Wynonna Earp (Syfy, On Hiatus, Status – Renewal Possible): The ratings for this show’s long-delayed fourth season premiere were decent for a Syfy show, but it has dropped notably since then. I’m thinking it still has a decent chance for a fifth season renewal, but fans should definitely remain active on the social networks to give the show a boost. More on that at this link. This show returns for the second half of its fourth season in early 2021.
