Breaking News: The Walking Dead Will End With Its Eleventh Season

AMC’s long-running and previously top-rated zombie-pocalypse series The Walking Dead will be coming to an end with its upcoming eleventh season. That show is currently in its tenth year and its previously planned season finale will air in October as a special episode with six more Season 10 eps added for 2021 (Deadline indicates it will be ten eps, but during the Comic-Con@Home virtual panel, only six were announced). That will be followed by a “super-sized” eleventh season which will consist of twenty-four episodes and will run over two years. Following that, a spin-off series starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride is targetted for a 2023 debut. That series may link in with the upcoming Rick Grimes movies which should begin production in 2021.  An anthology series titled Tales of The Walking Dead is also in the works.

I have been predicting for some time that the show might wrap up around its twelfth season, and for all practical purposes, it will. The additional episodes for Season 10 and 11 will deliver pretty much the same number as a twelfth season and that gives the show the opportunity to wrap up its storylines.  The remaining episode count should see the series end at about the same place as the comics with the Commonwealth storyline set to kick-off following the final battle with the Whisperers.

Once the top-rated scripted show on all of television, the numbers have slipped for TWD the last few years, but it continues to perform relatively well in the Peak TV environment. Spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead is heading into its sixth season, though that could very will be its last. And new entry The Walking Dead: World Beyond kicks off this Fall for a planned two-season run. The Darryl and Carol series as well as the anthology will be the next phase of the story for this franchise, and expect AMC to keep TWD on the air in some form or another for several more years beyond that.

Expect more announcements now that the 2019-20 season ended as we are still waiting for word on shows like Netflix’s Cursed, AMC’s Dispatches from Elsewhere, and Hulu’s Castle Rock.
