Breaking News: Altered Carbon Cancelled by Netflix After Two Seasons

Netflix has decided not to proceed with a third season of its cyberpunk drama Altered Carbon. According to Deadline, the decision was actually made back in April, though not announced until now, and was based on the streamer’s “viewership vs. cost renewal review process”. The show was well-received by critics and fans in its first year, holding a 68% Fresh Rating and 90% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes. The second season was a split, though, with critics giving it an 83% Fresh Rating while the viewers only gave it a 36% Audience Score.  The second season of the series scored well on IMDb Pro’s propriety ranking system MovieMeter, reaching as high as Number 1 and averaging a rank of 5.25 across its first four weeks of release.

This news follows on the heels of the cancellation last week of Netflix’s genre entries The Society and I Am Not Okay With This, but Altered Carbon was not dropped due to COVID-related production issues as the other two were.  Fans may attempt a Call to Action to convince the streaming service to bring the show back or for it to switch to another venue, but that will likely be an uphill battle.  It is an expensive show to produce and Netflix holds the rights for at least two years, so the chances of a revival are likely slim at this point.

Altered Carbon takes place in a future world where human memories and consciousness can be stored and “re-sleeved” in new bodies.  Takeshi Kovacs is a former dissident and elite warrior who is brought back after 250 years to solve a murder in a world where technology has made death nearly obsolete. Joel Kinnaman played Kovacs in the first season with Anthony Mackie taking over the role in the second season. The series is based on the book of the same name by Richard K. Morgan.
