Streaming Finds: Quibi Launches With Several Sci Fi and Fantasy Entries on the Way

Quibi is a new streaming service that launches today and is offering a 90-day free trial. The name is short for “quick bites” and it will stream originals that run for about ten minutes per episode and typically ten eps or less per season, and these are also only viewable on mobile devices. It will be rolling out a large number of originals (175 currently planned) over the next year, and that includes quite a number of genre entries. Following are the upcoming shows that should be of interest to sci fi fans, with the first scheduled for an April 13th premiere.

50 Stages of Fright (Premieres Apr 13): The first season of 50 States of Fright will explore stories based on urban legends from Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon and Washington taking viewers deeper into the horrors that lurk just beneath the surface of our country. Executive produced by Sam Raimi.

Code 8 (Premieres TBD): This is a spin-off from the science fiction movie of the same name that stars Arrow‘s Stephen Amell and Robbie Amell. The series will take place years after the events of the movie, centering around an ex-con (Robbie Amell) and telekinetic drug dealer (Stephen Amell) who are forced to work together to bring down a dangerous trafficking ring run by corrupt cops and the city’s elite.

Don’t Look Deeper (Premieres TBD): A high school senior starts believing that she is not human and discovers that her assumptions are correct. This revelation sets motions in events that put her life in jeopardy. Written and executive produced by Lost co-creator Jeffrey Lieber.

The Last American Vampire (Premieres TBD): This series follows a female FBI agent who teams up with a centuries-old vampire to protect the world from a nefarious threat. It is based on the book by Seth Grahame-Smith, and he will be onboard as executive producer.

Spielberg’s After Dark (Premieres TBD): This is a horror anthology series that is being written by Steven Spielberg. At Spielberg’s request, it will only be available to view at night.
