Cancellation Watch Breaking News: FX Has Renewed American Horror Story for Three More Seasons

FX exec John Landgraf announced at the TCAs today that its season-long horror anthology series American Horror Story has been renewed for three more seasons which will carry it to a thirteenth year. The show had already been renewed through its upcoming tenth season. The renewal was not a sure thing because the ratings for the show have been on the decline for several years. But it still ranks as one of the better-rated scripted shows on cable and it has surpassed the episode count preferred for a syndication run (where shows really turn a profit). That means that each additional season is just padding out the syndication package and also adding to what FX can charge for streaming rights. In addition, the show has regularly been a winner during awards season which helps bring more attention to the network. The tenth season will premiere in Fall 2020.

American Horror Story is a season-long horror anthology which presents different stories each year, though many of the same actors return to play new characters and the stories appear to be ultimately linked together. Regulars on the show have included Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, and Zachary Quinto. It was created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk who are also executive producers for the show.

With the TCAs going on, expect more announcements in the coming days. There are also still several more shows from the 2018-19 season that are awaiting word on their fate such as The Terror, and Mars, and I expect announcements on Fall shows like Watchmen and The Purge relatively soon.
