First Look at the Fall 2018 Schedule of Sci Fi and Fantasy Shows

The Updated Fall 2018-19 Schedule is Now Available at This Link

The broadcast networks have announced their schedules for Fall 2018 and I have put together a first look of that for the sci fi and fantasy shows.  This is based on what the broadcast nets have announced thus far and also includes cable staples that return in Fall each year (I am making assumptions on the day and timeslot for them at this point).  This is only a preliminary schedule and I expect changes plus additions as more of the cable channels start prepping for Fall.

First thing of interest to point out on the Fall schedule is that there are only 4 new shows from the broadcast networks.  But then that is the same number they had last year, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.  And currently I only see nineteen total shows scheduled, though I expect all those Syfy entries below to bow at some point in Fall.  Still, this is well short of the 36 shows we had across the broadcast nets and cable channels going into Fall 2017.  The number will almost certainly increase by the time the season actually starts, but I am thinking we will have less shows from these venues this time around.

The CW has the most genre entries among the broadcast nets, and they expand to Sunday nights starting in Fall. The network will rely on Supergirl (heading into its fourth season) and the Charmed reboot to get them a foothold on that night.  That network’s other new entry Legacies, a spin-off from The Originals that follows Hope Mikaelson, gets the Thursday post-Supernatural timeslot and may do okay there for the fifth place network. Arrow shifts to Mondays after Legends of Tomorrow while Tuesdays re-team The Flash and Black LightningThe 100 and iZombie are being held to mid-season again.

The other broadcast networks have shied away from sci fi and fantasy this Fall with only one having more than two entries on the schedule. ABC has nothing in the way of genre shows at this point beyond the sixth season of Agents of SHIELD which may not hit the schedule until Summer 2019. FOX has only one genre entry scheduled for Fall, returning series The Gifted, though it has The Orville returning at mid-season and new entry The Passage waiting in the wings along with another round of Cosmos on the way (plus Ghosted could make a return if FOX decides to keep that show going). CBS has two marginal genre entries in the spy fi series MacGyver (returning for its third season) and new series Touched by an Angel reboot Kevin (Probably) Saves the World God Friended Me.

NBC has the most of interest to genre fans among the Big Four broadcast nets. Its new reverse-Lost series Manifest gets the comfy post-The Voice timeslot on Mondays, though the lead-in from the singing competition has not been all to beneficial to shows the last couple of years. Supernatural comedy The Good Place returns for its third season in its usual Thursday timeslot. And prior Summer entry Midnight, Texas will see how it does in Fall as it takes up the Friday 9 PM EST timeslot for its second season.

Syfy currently has five shows that will likely hit the schedule in Fall, including new entry Nightflyers. As for the streaming services, I only know of Star Trek: Discovery and Stranger Things as late Fall entries at this point, but I expect that list to expand. Be sure to keep an eye on this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site over the coming weeks and months as this schedule continues to get fleshed out.
