Cancellation Watch: Lanterns Faces an Uncertain Future, Golden Axe Could Use Help from Fans, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

Lanterns (HBO, Status: On the Bubble): This show made it to the Number 8 slot in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of August 31st, pulling in an estimated 500 million minutes of viewing, covering the first four episodes. Considering the cost of the series (around $130 million for the first season), these numbers are probably below expectations, even though HBO previously touted its premiere numbers. When HBO boss Casey Bloys was asked after the Emmys if anything else related to the DCU is in development, he said “no, not right now” except for The People vs. Gorilla Godd (originally titled DC Crime). This likely has to do less with the ratings, though, and more with the upcoming Paramount merger, as that company is looking at other projects like Godzilla vs. Transformers, and the poor performance of Supergirl in theaters this past Summer likely likely put a dent in plans for the DCU. Still, the showrunners are pitching a second season, and Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre have indicated a willingness to return. I am moving this one to Bubble status due to all this uncertainty, and fans should probably make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention and improve its chances of continuing to a second year.

Golden Axe (Paramount+, Status: On the Bubble): We have not seen the viewership numbers for this show yet, but I do not expect it to place in the Nielsen Top 10. Much like this last Summer’s Among Us, Paramount+ released this animated series with very little in the way of promotion, and it has not received much notice thus far. There are plans for a second season of this series, but that is uncertain at this point. I am starting it out at Bubble status, and fans should definitely make some noise on the social networks to let more people know about this one.

Among Us (Paramount+, Status: On the Bubble): And speaking of this series, it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming rankings during its first season run, and there has been no word on its fate. It did wrap up its storylines, but showrunner Owen Dennis has said that if it returns he would approach it as a season-long anthology with new characters. This one was already moved to Bubble status, and it could certainly use some help from fans if they want to see more from it.

Star Wars Visions Presents: The Ninth Jedi (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): This installment of Star Wars Visions Presents did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, but the animated entries rarely do. It was intended to tell a complete story, though it is possible that they could revisit this part of the Star Wars universe at some point. Star Wars Visions has been pretty well respected so far, and I do expect more installments of this spin-off focusing on other characters from the main series.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

Daredevil: Born Again will be ending with its upcoming third season which is expected to premiere in Spring 2027. That brings the score for the just-started 2026-27 season to 11 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (44% of shows tracked) vs. 7 renewed (28%).
