Coming as no surprise, Daredevil: Born Again will be ending with its upcoming third season. I had previously predicted that, seeing as Disney+ has become averse to ongoing originals of late, preferring to focus on mini-series. Born Again acts as a continuation of the Daredevil series that originally ran on Netflix for three seasons before getting cancelled following a fallout between that streamer and Disney. The new series has been well-received by critics and fans, currently holding an 86% average Tomatometer Score (based on critics’ reviews) and an 82% average Popcornmeter Score (based on audience response) on Rotten Tomatoes across its first two seasons. But while the show reportedly had a strong premiere in its first year, it never placed in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and according to Luminate, its second season viewership slipped by 50%.
In addition to the announcement that Daredevil: Born Again will be coming to an end, showrunner Dario Scardapane will be departing because his contract has expired and was not renewed. Filming for the third season has been completed, but he will not be involved in the remainder of post-production. Since the Netflix days, this series has generally wrapped up its major storylines at the end of each season (Seasons 1 and 2 of Born Again combined to tell one story, but those were originally planned as a single season). So I expect that this show will not end on a cliffhanger, though it will likely leave open the possibility for a continuation down the road. The appearances of Jessica Jones and other members of the Defenders suggested that Marvel/Disney+ might consider bringing that team back, but with Born Again ending, that seems less likely now.
With this series coming to an end, that leaves only four active Marvel projects at Disney+: the VisionQuest mini-series (which premieres October 14th), the second season of the animated Marvel Zombies (no premiere date set at this point), the second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and the third season of X-Men ’97 (which arrives in 2027). The latter series is set to run through at least a fourth season, and it is not tied directly to the MCU, nor is the Spider-Man animated series. Wonder Man was originally renewed for a second season, but that decision was reversed. Disney+ has had a spotty record with shows from that franchise, with Loki—which ran for two seasons—as the only one that truly counted as a success. Franchise fatigue may be setting in, and Marvel may be focusing more on the big screen for the next few years. But I do expect that we will see more MCU projects on Disney+ at some point, likely as mini-series or specials along the lines of Punisher: One Last Kill and Werewolf by Night.
Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again is set to stream in Spring 2027, so it counts as part of the current 2026-27 season. That brings the score at this early point in the season to 11 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (44% of shows tracked) vs. 7 renewed (28%). Daredevil: Born Again follows blind attorney Matt Murdock, whose senses were enhanced following a childhood accident and who has become the crime-fighter known as Daredevil. He battles in the streets of New York City to keep its people safe from villains like Kingpin, who seek to terrorize and control the city. It stars Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, and Deborah Ann Woll.
