Status Updates
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This live-action reboot of the animated classic made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the first week of its second season premiere, placing at the Number 3 slot with an estimated 1.1 billion minutes viewed. That is down 58% from the over 2.5 billion minutes it posted for its series premiere back in 2024, and the current numbers include people going back and watching the first season. This is consistent with what we saw from the Netflix numbers as interest in the show waned over the two year hiatus between seasons. The show was renewed for a third season in advance, with work already beginning on that, and it will wrap up at that time.
House of the Dragon (HBO/HBO Max, Status: Renewed): This Game of Thrones prequel is another series experiencing a slump as it has returned down in its third season (also after an extended hiatus), though not as much as Avatar. It held at the Number 4 slot among aquired shows in its second week and it did improve to 931 million minutes watched. But for the first two weeks of its second season, it pulled in nearly 2 billion minutes watched, 20% higher than the 1.6 billion from the first two weeks of its third season. This one has already been renewed for a fourth season, though, and it will be wrapping up at that point.
President Curtis (Adult Swim, Status: Renewed): This animated spin-off from Rick & Morty premiered this past Sunday, and no numbers are available for it yet. But the network seems pretty confident in the show, and they announced at Comic Con that it will be continuing to a second season. The parent series just completed its ninth season and it has already been renewed through its twelfth, so President Curtis could stick around for a while as well.
The Last Ship (Netflix, Status: Encore Run): This post-apocalyptic series sailed into streaming at Netflix last month (you can read more about the show at this link), and it topped the Nielsen chart for acquired shows (besting House of the Dragon) the week of its premiere on that service, pulling in an estimated 1.2 billion minutes of viewing. This one delivered five seasons and 56 episodes in its original run on TNT, and it wrapped up most of its storylines with its final season. But if it turns into a streaming hit, perhaps they will get The Last Ship: The Next Generation in the works?
Blade Runner 2099 (Prime Video, Status: Mini-Series): We got a premiere date (November 25th) and a teaser for this Blade Runner spin-off (you can see that at this link) at Comic-Con, and also a confirmation on Amazon’s future plans for the show. Creator and showrunner Silka Luisa told Collider that they are approaching this one as a mini-series:
It was always considered as a limited series. Part of making the transition from film to TV is a really big jump for something that’s as cinematic as Blade Runner, and so, in that sense, it was really important to us that we told a story that, in a way, is like a movie in the sense that there’s a beginning, there’s a middle, and there’s an end. So we went into it with Alcon, with all of our producing partners, knowing we really want to tell a complete story. Eight episodes—I mean, eight’s my lucky number, that’s the number I would have picked, but it felt like the right amount for the story we were planning on telling.
If it does prove popular, it is always possible that they could do another show set in the same universe. The franchise previously appeared on television with the animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus which ran for one season on Adult Swim.

The expected renewal announcement for Interview with the Vampire came during Comic Con (to be name Queen of the Damned), and I have factored in the renewal for President Curtis, bringing the score for the 2025-26 season to 38 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (53% of shows tracked) and 14 cancelled and ending (19%), with 20 more waiting for word on thier fates.
