Cancellation Watch: Crystal Lake Starts Strong, Below Rises High in the Nielsen Rankings, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

Crystal Lake (Peacock, Status: Renewal Possible): We still haven’t seen the Nielsen numbers for this show (they should be available next week), but early viewing stats continue to look good. According to Variety, it pulled in 1.3 billion minutes of viewing in its first eleven days, making it the third most-watched original series for Peacock. It also has strong engagement on social media, pulling in 1.8 billion impressions in one day and more than 7.6 million video views over 11 days, according to Sprout Social. The showrunners do have a second season planned for this one, and even though Peacock has not been the best about supporting its originals, this one is off to a good start and could continue beyond its first year.

Below (Netflix, Status: Mini-Series): This eco-horror entry continues to perform well, topping the Netflix chart for the third week in a row and premiering in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at Number 2 for its first week, pulling in an estimated 1.2 billion minutes of viewing based on Nielsen sampling. It was designed as a close-ended mini-series, but it did leave open the possibility of continuing, and Netflix execs certainly have to be considering that at this point.

Cyberpunk Edgerunner (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): The second season of this anime series made it into the Netflix Top 10 for Non-English Language shows for its premiere week at the Number 3 slot, pulling in 21.9 million hours watched across 4.6 million accounts. Those are good numbers, especially for an animated series, and this one could continue to a third season.

Carrie (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This reboot of the classic Stephen King horror story hit the Number 1 slot in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere, pulling in an estimated 1.3 billion minutes of viewing. The early numbers had already been looking good for this one, and Amazon has given it a second season renewal, which means that the story will extend beyond the original book.

From (Netflix, Status: Encore Run): The first three seasons of this sci fi horror series are now streaming on Netflix, and it placed at Number 7 in that streamer’s Top 10 for its premiere week, pulling in 24.3 million hours of viewing across 2.9 million accounts. The show has completed its fourth season on MGM+ and is headed into its fifth and final year on that platform. Its success after getting licensed to Netflix (we have seen the same with Paramount+’s School Spirits and AMC’s Talamasca: The Secret Order) is a notable trend to keep an eye on as the streaming landscape continues to evolve and adapt.
