Sci Fi TV Highlights: Weekly post looking at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note. The dates and times shown below can change with little to no notice.
Sci Fi TV Premieres:
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+): The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, led by Captain Christopher Pike, embarks on a series of thrilling and emotional adventures across the stars. On their journey, they will battle inner demons and external threats, encounter colorful new characters, reunite with familiar faces and confront terrifying aliens. Through it all, they strive to embrace a bright, hopeful future. The first episode will be available on Thursday.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe (HBO Max): After accidentally creating a new multiverse, comic book store owner Stuart Bloom must locate a quantum-interference device to restore reality. The first episode will be available on Thursday.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender (Paramount+): Based on the animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, this new story in the Avatar universe sees Aang learn of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve. Premieres on Saturday.
The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC): Maggie and Negan finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city? Premieres Sunday at 9 PM EST.
Schedule Notes:
This is definitely a busy week for sci fi and fantasy television with five premieres (which includes two original movies) as well as two season finales. In addition to the new Avatar film, the original horror movie Saccharine arrives on Shudder on Friday. Wrapping up is Rick & Morty which has its Season 9 finale on Sunday. That one has already been renewed for a tenth season. Also wrapping up is My Adventures with Superman which has its third season finale on Sunday. There is no word on a fourth year of that one yet. Sci Fi TV News of Note:
Work has begun on the previously announced Zoltar TV series which takes place in the same universe as the 1988 Tom Hanks film Big. Developed by D. Christopher Campbell and Dashon English, it tells the story Walter Douglas, a terminally ill man who encounters a Zoltar machine and wishes he could turn back the clock. His wish is granted, but instead of simply becoming younger, he is transformed back into a teenager and must relive his life while being raised by his estranged adult daughter, Diane. This property has been floating around for a while, and now a listing for it is showing up in Production Weekly. It is unclear at this point if any network or streaming service is attached, and there have been no casting announcements yet.
Starlog Magazine is set to return in Fall 2026 with its first print issue since April 2009. That publication got its start in August 1976 as the only professional magazine on the stands dedicated to covering the sci fi, fantasy, and horror genres. (Famous Monsters of Filmland was still around, but its focus was mostly on horror). Starlog was a primary source of news and deep dives into genre movies and television (and I was picking it up off the stands each month because, yes, I am that old), and it offered coverage on such pivotal sci fi TV shows from that time as Star Trek, Space: 1999, Battlestar: Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and more. It ran through 2009 before ending its print run when internet sites started to seriously cut into the sales of magazines. The return issue is set for Fall 2026, though a specific release date has not been announced yet. In casting news, the lead role of Kratos in the upcoming Prime Video series God of War–executive produced by Ronald D. Moore–will be recast after Ryan Hurst (The Walking Dead) was injured on set. There is no word on who will be replacing him at this point. Seth Green (Robot Chicken) has expressed an interest in playing the character Mordecai in the Peacock adaptation of Dungeon Crawler Carl, but there is no indication at this point that he is being considered for the role. Jimmy Tatro (Scream 7) will be coming onboard the Jimmy Olsen series DC Crime, voicing the main villain Gorilla Grodd.
In scheduling news, the thirteenth season of FX’s American Horror Story has received a premiere date of September 24th. An official trailer for that has not been released yet, but will likely be arriving soon.

Crystal Lake (Peacock): A prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise, the series follows single mother Pam Voorhees who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events are set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees? Premieres October 15th.
