Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
La Brea (Netflix/Peacock, Status: Encore Run): This prehistoric NBC series which ended after three seasons has had a resurgance in streaming, topping the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for Acquired shows with nearly 1.3 billion minutes viewed the week of its premiere on Netflix (that also includes viewership on Peacock). The series wrapped up most of its storylines after its third season, but it was rushed to an end and perhaps Netflix would have an interest in picking it up and carrying it on to a fourth season or more, similar to what they did with NBC’s Manifest. If there are fans lobbying for this one to continue, this is certainly a good sign for the show, and now is a good time for a Call to Action.
Spider-Noir (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): It is too early for the Nielsen numbers from this show (they run on about a one-month delay), but according to data from Luminate, it has pulled in 2.4 million viewers over its first ten days. Those are decent viewing stats, but definitely not at The Boys levels (3.9 million viewers for the first ten days of its fifth season), and I am guessing this is a pretty expensive show to produce. The show has received good marks from critics and viewers so far, currently holding a 91% Tomatometer Score and 92% Popcornmeter Score on Rotten Tomatoes. And while there has been no word on a second season yet, this one does have franchise possibilities, so Amazon may keep it going for a while. (You can read my review of the series at this link.)
Star City (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This spin-off from Apple TV’s For All Mankind got off to a slow start across it first ten days, pulling in around 600K viewers according to Luminate. Though that is only slightly behind the numbers for the fifth season of the parent series (around 800K viewers), so perhaps that is not too bad. It has received good marks from critics so far, currently holding a 96% Tomatotmeter Score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it is part of a rather prestigious Apple TV IP, so it still has a chance of continuing to a second season.
The Acolyte (Disney+, Status: Cancelled): This live-action Star Wars series was cancelled by Disney+ after one season back in 2024 due to low viewership. But since that time, more people have been discovering the show, and showrunner Leslye Headland has indicated that she would like to take a stab at a second season. She had the following to say in an interview with Empire magazine:
I would still want to do it! Absolutely. As more people discover it, I think people may want to see some form of the story come back. We did have a lot of stuff that we wanted to explore — including tying in lore to the sequels.
There is no indication at this point that the streamer would consider bringing the show back, but a Call to Action from fans could put this one back on the radar and possibly give it a chance to continue.
