Why Watch It?

Back when The CW was known as the champion of genre programming among the broadcast networks, they leaned heavily into superhero shows (Smallville, Arrow) and supernatural dramas (The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural), but they did have some full-on sci fi entries, and The 100 was the longest-running of those. Based on the YA novel series of the same name, the show delved into a post-apocalyptic world with a story that expanded and evolved over its seven-year run. It starts out as a desperate survival mission for a group of dissidents cast out from a space station orbiting Earth, but quickly turns into a struggle involving rival factions, dangerous environments, moral dilemmas, and the lingering consequences of humanity’s past mistakes. The series blends action, political intrigue, and science fiction concepts while exploring themes of leadership, survival, and what people are willing to sacrifice to protect their own.

Keep in mind that this is a CW show, so it does have plenty of pretty faces and angsty drama, but there was still a decent sci fi series at its core. And fans did believe that it derailed in later seasons, but the first four or five years are considered to be mostly solid. And for those tired of the short runs of current television programming and looking for an old-school-style show that ran for multiple seasons and a decent chunk of episodes, this definitely delivers on that. The 100 developed a devoted fanbase over its tenure, and many are still finding this show and discovering it to be somewhat of a sleeper sci fi entry, so it is certainly worth seeking out, especially the early seasons.

Where Is It Streaming?

This series was a staple on Netflix for several years (as were many of The CW’s shows), but it left that venue back in December 2025. As of May 2026, it is now streaming for free (with ads) on Pluto TV. That service is known for its many live-streaming channels (and I believe that you will be able to catch episodes of this one on their sci fi channel), but it also has quite a large selection of television shows and movies that are available on demand, which is where you will find The 100. As a note, Pluto TV’s ads can get somewhat excessive at times, so that is a cost you will have to pay if you want to watch the show for free (it is not currently streaming on any other service). This at least offers a good way to sample the series, and then you have the option of purchasing it on physical media or VOD if you find it to your liking.
