HBO is going all-in on its Harry Potter reboot and has renewed it for a second season in advance of its first season premiere. An entry for that appeared in the Production Weekly listings back in April, and now the network has officially confirmed the renewal. The television series is delivering a ground-up reboot with an all-new cast, and the claim is that it will more closely follow the books by J.K. Rowling. The first season, which will be titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is in production now and is targeting a December 2026 premiere. The second season, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, following the order of the books, is set to start filming in Fall, and that should reduce the hiatus between seasons to about one year. HBO boss Casey Bloys previously commented on the production plans for the show, saying the following:
Our goal is to not have a huge gap, you know, especially because the kids are growing. It’s not going to be an annual; the show is too big and too massive. But … they’re writing the season two now.
The network has plans to adapt all seven books in the series, but that will all depend on how fans respond to this reboot of the beloved franchise.
Since the first season of the show will not premiere until the end of this year at the earliest, this announcement will count toward the upcoming 2026-27 season. The Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season stands at 31 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (61% of shows tracked) vs. 14 cancelled and ending (27%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.
The first season of the Harry Potter reboot series will kick off with Harry’s 11th birthday, when he receives a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which opens up a new world for him while also forcing him to face a dangerous enemy from his past. It stars Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, Alastair Stout, John Lithgow, Janet McTeerl, Paapa Essiedu, and Warwick Davis.
