Starfleet Academy only had a brief, and somewhat controversial, tenure on streaming, but fans are fighting to assure that the voyages continue.
What Is It?
This series takes place in the 32nd century, where Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets are recovering from the cataclysmic events seen in the final season of Star Trek: Discovery. It follows the first class of students and teachers to attend the newly re-established Starfleet Academy as they come of age and train to be officers.
Aired: 2026, One Season Totaling 10 Episodes (plus one more season on the way)
Starring: Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Robert Picardo
Created By: Gaia Violo
Why Was It Cancelled?
This series arrived in January of 2026 as the latest entry in the Star Trek franchise, and it faced mixed reactions right away. It veered notably from other Trek shows by focusing more on the relationships between the characters and less on the voyages through the galaxy and science fiction elements that many fans were looking for. It also brought in a fair dose of culture politics and social issues that seemed to distance long-time fans from the series (even though Trek has been doing that since it began). It did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and word is that it pulled in the lowest viewership for any Trek entry (Paramount+ did not release any official numbers, but the free premiere only amassed 159K views over four days). And while critics gave the show an 85% Tomatometer Score on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers only gave it a 52% Popcornmeter Score (though there was definitely some review bombing going on there).
Paramount+ announced that the show would end with its upcoming second season (which is mostly complete), and that effectively acted as a cancellation, seeing as there were plans for it to continue to a third year and beyond. In part, the cancellation is related to the streamer rethinking its direction with the Star Trek franchise (more on that at this link), but the less-than-stellar reaction to Starfleet Academy likely factored in as well. The show tried to go in a different direction with the franchise, and that was generally not well-received. Whether the second season would have brought fans back is uncertain (it will probably stream in early 2027), but the execs at Paramount apparently decided to cut bait on this one and look to other Trek projects instead (or give the franchise a rest).
What Can the Fans Do to Help?
Starfleet Academy is in a similar situation to Star Trek: Prodigy, which was also cancelled after its first season even though its second had already been completed. That show got pulled from streaming on Paramount+, and then Netflix picked it up, streaming the first season and then later the second season. That venue had the option to keep it going for a third year and more, but viewership was not high enough, and it remained cancelled. As of now, the second year of Starfleet Academy is set to stream on Paramount+, but don’t be surprised if it gets booted like Prodigy.
If Starfleet Academy does continue beyond its second season, that is all up to the fans at this point. They have things off to a good start with an online petition that has passed 42K signatures as of this writing. But with Paramount currently reconsidering the franchise’s future, that is not enough. They need to stage watch parties and get the show into the Paramount+ Top 10 as well as the Nielsen Streaming Rankings. They also need to make some noise on the social networks to bring the show more attention. In addition, they can vote for it in our poll on which direction the franchise should take. Perhaps if they can interest another venue in jumping onboard, the show could continue in a similar arrangement as School Spirits, which streams first on Paramount+ then is licensed to Netflix for an encore run. But the fans will need to prove that it is worth it for another streamer to invest in the property
This will definitely be an uphill battle because fans will need to get corporate execs to change their minds as they are looking to shake up the Trek universe. But if their efforts can draw enough attention to the show, perhaps the voyages of Starfleet Academy could continue.
Where Can You Watch It?
As mentioned above, the series is still streaming on Paramount+, but there is no guarantee it will stay there. Star Trek: Prodigy was pulled from that streamer, though it did end up on Netflix for a while (it is now only available VOD). Since SA could potentially get kicked off Paramount+, fans should take the opportunity to stage watch parties while it is still there.
