Cancellation Watch: Ahsoka Season 2 Is on the Way, The Orville Gets Another Non-Update, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Ahsoka (Disney+): A second season of this show is in the works as expected, though Disney has not gone out of the way to bring the renewal much attention. The confirmation came as part of the announcement of the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie which was revealed yesterday on StarWars.com. The mention of Ahsoka Season 2 came at the very end of that and there were no additional details.  Expect the show to make its return at some point in 2025.

The Orville (Hulu): Seth McFarlane has given us another update on The Orville, but it doesn’t really tell us much.  He claims that the show is not cancelled saying:

There is no official death certificate for The Orville. It is still with us. I can’t go any further than that at the moment. There are too many factors.

But that doesn’t provide much more information than what was already available, and it has been over a year since the second season wrapped up.  Adrianne Palicki previously said that she has no plans to return to the show because of its lengthy shooting schedule and the entire cast and crew have been released from their contracts.  Perhaps a fourth season could happen at some point, but the chances of bringing the entire crew back together seem pretty slim.

Star Trek: Prodigy (Netflix): The first season of the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy recently starting streaming on Netflix and the second season will be arriving at some point this year. Beyond that, the show’s creators The Hageman Brothers have plans for it to continue into a third year, but nothing is confirmed at this point. Prodigy was cancelled by Paramount+ after its first season and removed from streaming as a cost-cutting measure, but Netflix later picked up the show (which had mostly completed production on its second season). There was no indication at that time that the streamer had plans to produce additional seasons, but if viewership is good for the show, perhaps a third year and more could happen.  It has not made it into the Netflix Top 10 across its first two weeks of streaming, though.
