Shining Vale Cancelled by Starz and Will Be Removed from Streaming

Starz has cancelled its little-watched supernatural comedy Shining Vale and the show will be pulled from streaming by the end of the year. That one debuted back in March 2022 but never found much of an audience. Its first season averaged only a 0.02 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic, and that slipped to 0.01 for the second season. The premium cable channels do not pay as much attention to the same-day ratings because they are not beholden to advertisers, but those are a leading indicator that the show was not drawing much viewership. The lack of promotion by Starz definitely did not help as the show pretty much disappeared in the Peak TV glut of programming, and I had it on Bubble status for the majority of its second season. Creator Jeff Astrof had the following to say bout the cancellation:

Given all the real heart-breaking news going on in the world right now, it would be inappropriate for me to say I’m heartbroken about Starz not picking up Shining Vale for a Season 3. However, I have no problem saying I am crushed and deeply saddened by the news. For the actors, it has been a year since we wrapped, but I have been working on writing Season 3 up until I heard the news last week.

Shining Vale will get shopped around, but it may be difficult to find it a new venue since it never developed much of a following. Fans should definitely take to the social networks with a Call to Action if they want to help this one find a new home.

Starz will also be removing the show from streaming at the end of the year. This has become a disturbing new trend among the networks and streaming services and indicates that Starz is likely taking a write-down on the property for tax purposes. Whether it will still be available for encore runs on the linear network is unclear, but my guess is that it will not.

With this cancellation, that brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season to 6 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries so far (16% of shows tracked) vs. 13 renewed (34%). Shining Vale follows a family that moves into a haunted house in a small town, and the mother starts seeing the ghosts that inhabit their new home. It stars Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear, Gus Birney, Merrin Dungey, Dylan Gage, and Mira Sorvino.
