Good Omens Has Been Renewed for a Third and Final Season at Amazon

The fantasy series Good Omens will be returning to Amazon’s Prime Video for a third season and that will be its last. The show was originally planned as a mini-series, but writer and co-creator Neil Gaiman had plans to continue the story and Amazon brought it back for a second season four years after the third premiered. Gaiman’s plans also included a third year and Amazon has agreed to let that go forward. The second season of the show spent two weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and average 441 million minutes of viewing per week. Gaiman had the following comments about the renewal:

I’m so happy finally to be able to finish the story Terry and I plotted in 1989 and in 2006. Terry was determined that if we made Good Omens for television, we could take the story all the way to the end. Season One was all about averting Armageddon, dangerous prophecies, and the End of the World. Season Two was sweet and gentle, although it may have ended less joyfully than a certain Angel and Demon might have hoped. Now, in Season Three, we will deal once more with the end of the world. The plans for Armageddon are going wrong. Only Crowley and Aziraphale working together can hope to put it right. And they aren’t talking.

The options for series leads Michael Sheen and David Tennant had been picked up several weeks ago prompting speculation that the show would be returning.  Showrunner Douglas Mackinnon will be departing, but Neil Gaiman will still be onboard writing and guiding the show.  Filming on the third season is said to be starting soon, so it is possible that it could premiere by the end of the 2024.

This counts back to the 2022-23 season and pushes the overall score for that year in favor of renewals with 44 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (48% of shows tracked) vs. 43 cancelled and ending (47%). There are still four shows from that season awaiting word on their fates.
