Cancellation Watch: SurrealEstate Needs Help from Fans, George R.R. Martin Talks Future Seasons of House of the Dragon, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

SurrealEstate (Syfy, Completed 2nd Season, On the Bubble): The season finale for this show’s second year pulled a 0.02 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 195K total viewers. Those numbers are certainly not very strong, though on a positive note, the show posted better viewership in the weeks that it did not have Chucky as a lead-in. Still, the numbers are quite low and SurrealEstate could be facing a second cancellation unless its international partnership deals are enough to keep it viable. Fans should definitely make a Call to Action for this one on the social networks to improve its chances of sticking around for a third year.

House of the Dragon (HBO, Completed 1st Season, Renewed): The second season of this show is on track for a Summer 2024 premiere, and George R.R. Martin was recently discussing working on the third and fourth seasons. The show has not been officially renewed past its second year, though, and there is no guarantee that additional seasons will happen, especially as Warner Bros. Discovery remains in cost-cutting mode. House of the Dragon is very expensive to produce and could find itself on the chopping block if viewership declines. It’s likely the network would give it at least a third season to wrap up storylines, but even that is not a sure thing. The third and fourth years for the show could still happen, but they have not been officially greenlit by HBO and nothing is for certain as the Peak TV Crunch continues to take its toll on the television landscape.

Fal All Mankind (Apple TV+, Streaming 4th Season, Renewal Possible): This show did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming rankings for the premiere week of its fourth season, but word is that it is still performing well for the streaming service. There has been no mention of a fifth season for this one, and it could be looking to wrap up in a year or so. I expect that Apple will at least give this one the chance to go out on its own terms since it has been one of their flagship shows, so don’t be surprised if a fifth season is announced as its last.
