Cancellation Watch: Star Trek Strange New Worlds Enters the Nielsen Rankings, What We Do in the Shadows Holds Steady for FX, and More

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Nielsen Streaming Rankings:

Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds entered the Nielsen rankings for streaming originals the week of June 12th to 18th. That was the week of its Season 2 premiere and it started at the Number 7 slot with an estimated 338 million minutes watched. That show has already been renewed for a third season. Netflix’s Black Mirror had its sixth season premiere that week and it topped the charts at Number 1 with 1.4 billion minutes watched. A seventh season of that shows looks like a good bet at this point. Manifest slipped to Number 2 with 969 million minutes viewed. That show is in its final season. Following are the results for all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows in the Nielsen streaming charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

FX’s What We Do in the Shadows returned for its fifth season last Thursday and averaged a 0.11 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 305K total viewers across the two episodes aired. That is about even with its fourth season numbers and that one has already been renewed for a sixth year.

On Sunday, AMC’s The Walking Dead: Dead City slipped to a 0.12 rating in the demo with 701K total viewers. Those are still decent numbers for a basic cable series these days and that one is likely also getting a lot of views on streaming with AMC+. It has been billed as a mini-series, but could continue to a second season.

On Monday last week, The Rising remained at a 0.02 rating with 331K total viewers for The CW. The numbers for that acquisition started decent for a Summer entry but have dropped off the last few weeks, and it is unlikely the network would be interested in saving a show already cancelled by Sky Max in Britain.
